Closet Organization Made Easy For Summer

The warm-weather months are here!  It’s time to break out the bathing suits, tank tops and sun dresses that signal the kickoff to another fun-filled summer, and it’s finally safe to pack away the bulky winter jackets, sweaters and long pants that got you through the fall and winter.

Of course, there’s more to closet organization than just throwing things in boxes.  Bringing out warm weather clothes is exciting, but if you want to be happily reunited with your winter wear when the temperatures drop again, some planning is in order.

Here are some quick and easy home closet organization tips to safely store your winter gear and get your closet summer ready:

  • Keep it clean.  Before storing any of your winter clothes, each item should be washed.  Stains can set if left untreated, and insects are much more likely to take up residence in clothing that hasn’t been cleaned.
  • Shrink it and store it.  There’s no reason to let chunky sweaters, overcoats and pants dominate your closet when it’s warm outside.  Try the Space Bag High Capacity Cube, and store up to 16 sweaters in half the space they’d usually require.  The Space Bag High Capacity Cube can be easily stacked in the back of your closet and will keep your clothes dry, pest-free and fresh until next season.
  • Give extra shoes the boot.  Shoes are some of the bulkiest items in most people’s closets.  Give your collection an honest assessment, and store anything that you won’t be using for the next few months.  You can store them in a Space Bag and slide them under the bed for easy shoe organization.
  • Sort your stuff.  You can still make your closet summer ready, even if you don’t have the luxury of extra storage space in your home.  If space is at a premium, you can rearrange the contents of your closet so that cold- weather items are kept toward the back of the closet, while those that are going to be used in the coming months are kept in a more easily accessible area.
  • Shelve it.  Consider hanging a shelf in the upper part of your closet.  Most closets have some additional space above the hanger rod, and with a drill and inexpensive shelf kit, you can give yourself additional storage space for stackable items.
  • Remember clean, cool, dark and dry.  Wherever you store your winter wardrobe, make sure that the space meets these important criteria to prevent fading, pests, mold and mildew.
  • Pest-proof your clothes.  Try cedar chips to keep clothing pest-free without the unpleasant odor of mothballs.  Space Bag Storage Packs can also be used to keep your clothes free of moths and other destructive nesters.
