Dorm Room Space Savers From Jacquie Ross

Organizing a college dorm room can be a challenge because most dorm rooms are small and sometimes awkwardly shaped. Most college freshmen also have to adjust to living in one room, where they will sleep, study, play, cook, hang out and relax with friends.

Creating a dorm room organization plan before moving in will help college students start the school year off right. Maximizing space is key, so here are some space-saving ideas to help you decide what products and furniture you’ll need to purchase before move-in.

Create a multi-functional space. A loft bed is a wonderful alternative to the typical twin bed and will greatly maximize space in the dorm room. Loft beds are raised and usually have enough space underneath to place a student desk. Many loft beds are even designed with a built-in desk and chest of drawers. Not all colleges allow a loft bed, so it’s important to check the housing rules first.

Give the bed a boost. If a loft bed is not an option, bed risers are another way to create more storage space under the bed by lifting the mattress up a few inches or even more. Space Bag Storages Packs can contain bulky bedding, extra linens or off-season clothing to a manageable size and can be easily stored under the bed to maximize storage space.

Go vertical. Use as much of the wall space as you possibly can. Tall bookcases, stackable crates and stackable storage drawers are all affordable ideas for storing and organizing belongings, without taking up valuable floor space.

Get crafty with closet space. If the closet only has a hanging bar, you can use hanging sweater shelves and stackable organizers to help store folded clothes. The Space Bag Hanging Bag compresses clothing up to one-third its normal size and can be conveniently hung from the closet rod. These bags are perfect to hang off-season clothing, or clothing that isn’t worn very often. Why take up valuable closet space with clothing that you rarely wear?

Don’t forget the doors. Make the most of the storage area available by utilizing the space on the back of the door to organize shoes or other items. Depending on what you need to store and organize, you could use an over-the-door shoe pocket organizer, an over-the-door coat rack, or an over-the-door wire storage rack. Don’t forget the inside of the closet door and bathroom door, too.

Living in an organized dorm room is one of the keys to success for college students. An organized room allows students to focus on their studies, instead of being distracted by the clutter around them.
