Making the Most of Shared Closet Space

Walk-in closets, often found in master bedrooms, have a lot of storage potential, but are sometimes cluttered by disorganized clothing. The first step in a closet overhaul is to sort your belongings and purge unneeded items. Be honest when evaluating each piece of clothing and donate any questionable items. Once you have rid your space of unnecessary clutter, follow these suggestions for organizing the master closet:

Separate his and her clothing. Men and women should have their own portion of closet space. If a couple has a large height difference, it may be best to store men’s clothing on the top rod and women’s items below. Another option is to give each person his or her own wall to hang clothes, stack shelves and hold shoes. Once each side is designated to a single person, he or she can further customize organization based on needs. For example, you may find you prefer your clothes to be color coordinated, while your partner may desire a wardrobe organized by occasion. Just because you are sharing a closet, doesn’t mean you need to have identical ways of organizing your clothing. Pick a system that works best for you.

Keep ready-to-wear items at the forefront. Re-evaluate your wardrobe each season to clear out unneeded items. In the spring, place winter sweaters and jackets in a Space Bag and store it in an out of the way place, like an attic, basement or under the bed. The Space Bag’s airtight seal will protect your clothes from dust, moths and mildew during storage. Suits and dresses worn on special occasions items should also be kept out of the way. One good way to store them is in a Space Bag Vacuum-seal Hanging Bag to store at the back of the closet. These strategies will make sure the items you need every day are within easy reach.

Think beyond the hanger. Closets are traditionally utilized most for hanging items, but there are other storage options that can create more space. Install shelves at the top of a closet and purchase cabinets or drawers for the bottom to maximize room. The back of a closet door is perfect for hanging purses, ties, belts or other accessories.

Keep shoes off the floor. It can be tempting to kick off shoes into the closet after a hard day of work, but this strategy tends to create a messy closet floor. If you have floor space, buy a shoe rack to keep under hanging garments. A hanging shoe organizer is a good option for smaller closets and can easily be hung on the back of a closet door. Having shoes on the floor will only tempt you to toss other items down with them.
