How to Safely Store Family Treasures

The holidays are special occasions and prompt many people to take out their best china and other family treasures for the celebrations. It is important to use extra precautions, however, when storing delicate items like handmade linens, silver and fragile holiday decorations. By following the steps below, you can guarantee your family treasures will stay and organized while being stored in your home.

Protect china from cracking. China and other special dinnerware are at risk of chipping and cracking if not stored properly. To help prevent against nicks and scratches, wrap each item in a cloth napkin, bubble wrap or newspaper pages before packaging them. Glasses are especially fragile and should be individually wrapped and stored upright to protect the rims from chipping.

Wash linens before packing. Handmade quilts, linens and crochet pieces should be washed and dried before storage. If not washed, stains can set in the fabrics and cause permanent damage. Avoid starching or ironing linens, which could cause discoloration. These delicate items can be protected from dust, moisture and bugs when stored in a Space Bag High Capacity Cube. When packed and vacuum sealed, the Space Bag Cube allows you to store more items in less space. And because they’re airtight and waterproof, the Cube can be stored almost anywhere&em;garage, attic, or basement.

Utilize compartmentalized containers. Small and fragile items like ornaments and holiday tchotchkes are best stored in compartmentalized containers. Repurpose an egg carton for especially small decorative pieces. If you still have the original packaging for drinking glasses or wine glasses, these can also be used.

Secure lids in place. Teapots and other serving dishes with lids require extra care. Use twine to keep the lid connected to the container. Wind the string in a figure eight motion for the best protection and avoid stacking things on top of lids, which could dislodge them.

Keep the silver shining. Polish silver before placing it in storage. To protect silver from scratching, wrap each piece in a soft cloth or store in a felt-lined box. For extra protection, visit a jeweler or other specialty shop that can carry bags specifically designed for storing silver.

Clearly label boxes. Be sure to label each box or bin clearly with a description of the contents inside. This will make identifying your decorations and family treasures easy when it is time to unpack holiday décor next year.
