Unclutter the Linen Closet

The linen closet is one area of the home that is almost always a challenge to organize. Stacks of rarely used guest bedding and mismatched towels often take up valuable storage space. The following tips will help you tidy up this troublesome area.

The good news is that most of what makes linen closets tough to keep in order can be fixed! With a little planning, an honest assessment of what’s being used and the right tools, you can get back to the days when finding the right sheet set wasn’t such a challenge.

Regain control of your home’s linen closets with these quick and easy tips:

  • Be honest.  Do you really need 20 sets of sheets and 54 towels? Limit yourself to three sets of sheets per bed and three sets of bath towels, hand towels and washcloths per person. Get rid of the rest.
  • Contain it.   Extra toiletries often stored in linen closets are much more manageable when you store them in containers. Wicker baskets, plastic bins or cloth wrapped baskets are all great options when it comes to keeping shampoos, conditioners, soaps and lotions in one place.
  • Combat bulk.  Try storing off season comforters and blankets in a Space Bag Higher Capacity Tote. With the tote, you can store your bedding sets in half the space and keep them safe from moisture, dirt and bugs.
  • Sort your stacks.  Ever pulled out an entire stack of towels when all you want is a washcloth? Linen closets get messy quickly when items aren’t stored in a way that makes them easily accessible. Sort your bath sheets, towels, hand towels and washcloths into individual stacks so that it isn’t necessary to move things around to find what you need.
  • Do it right the first time.  Properly folding items before storing them in the linen closet will help you maximize your space. Bed sheets can become a big, tangled mess when not folded correctly. Check out tips on how to fold even the largest bedding all by yourself, even those tricky fitted sheets.
  • Old linens, new rags.  Be sure to clear your closet of old or heavily worn linens periodically   anything that isn’t being used more than once every six months gets repurposed or donated. Old towels make great cleaning rags, and old sheets make perfect drop cloths for the kids’ next craft project.
  • Pillow plight.  The bulkiest items in your linen closet are also the most infrequently used. Keep extra pillows from taking over by storing them in a Space Bag High Capacity Cube. They can then be stacked on the top shelf or stored in the garage or attic until you need them again.
