Make Disaster Preparedness A Priority This Month

Whether you live in the Southeast, Midwest, Northeast or West, early fall is natural disaster season.  With the possibility of hurricanes on the Eastern Seaboard and Southern states, and violent thunderstorms and flooding in the Midwest and West, now is the time to prepare yourself and your belongings for a disaster or a quick evacuation from your home.  With a little prior planning, you can get your family organized.

Here are some quick tips to properly prepare yourself for storm season and ensure that you and your family are natural disaster ready:

  • Start with a kit.  Be sure to include enough non-perishable food and water to be self-sufficient for three days.  Your kit should also include a flashlight, portable, battery-operated radio or television, batteries, prescription and over-the-counter medicines, anti-bacterial hand wipes, first aid kit, cash, clothing, and sanitation supplies.  Also include photocopies of the contents of your wallet.  Keep your kit in an easy-to-pack, weatherproof container like a Space Bag High Capacity Cube.
  • Protect what’s left behind.  You’ll need to travel light if being evacuated during a natural disaster, and you will be required to leave some valuable or important items behind.  Make sure that items you want to come home to are stored in weatherproof storage containers, like Space Bag Storage Packs.  Space Bag products keep items safe from moisture and will ensure that your belongings aren’t destroyed by storm waters.  They’re ideal for safeguarding special items of clothing, children’s toys, photos and even important documents.  Just put a piece of cardboard in the bag before sealing it to keep your papers from wrinkling.
  • Designate a meeting place.  Be sure that everybody in your household knows where they should go to meet the rest of the family in case you’re separated during a natural disaster.
  • Take note of what you have.  Create an inventory of the valuable contents of your home by videotaping or photographing items and storing the resulting tapes and photos in a safe, weatherproof container.  Space Bag Storage Packs are ideal.
  • Don’t let pets fend for themselves.  Make arrangements in advance to care for pets.  Due to health concerns, most emergency housing facilities do not allow pets, so it’s necessary to speak with your local veterinarian prior to a natural disaster to determine a safe place to leave your family’s furry friend.
  • Shut it down.  Be familiar with the process of shutting down your home’s gas, water and electricity.  If lines are damaged during a natural disaster, quickly turning down the lines may be crucial.  If you’re being evacuated, lines should be shut down prior to leaving the house.
