Preparing for an Outdoor Adventure

Now that the weather has warmed up, camping season has arrived! Preparing for an outdoor adventure requires a bit more thought than staying at a hotel or vacation home. But with the right planning, packing for a camping or hiking trip can be easy.

  • Don’t forget the essentials. If you’re bringing a tent, remember to bring all the supplies that go along with it, such as stakes, a mallet, ground sheet and sleeping pads. Pack all tent supplies in one bag. Lighting is important, so be sure your flashlights, headlamps and lanterns are in working order before you leave home. It’s also a good idea to bring extra batteries and fuel. And don’t forget to pack chairs and blankets for lounging around the campfire.
  • Food preparation. For hiking trips and on-the-go outdoor adventures, it’s important to have non-perishable foods on hand that don’t require a lot of preparation. Grab some granola bars and fruit to munch on while exploring. If you’re planning a weekend stay, bring an ice chest to store all food that would normally be refrigerated. Consider buying an ice block, which melts slower than ice cubes. And don’t forget cups, plates, serving utensils and cooking supplies, including a grill, charcoal and a lighter or matches. Key item: trash bags!
  • Pack lightly but efficiently. Look at the weather forecast and pack clothes based on the coldest weather expected. Prevent bulky cold-weather items like coats and jackets from taking up all the space in your backpack or duffel bag by packing them in Space Bag To Go Bags. To Go Bags don’t require a vacuum cleaner and are easily rolled up and compressed. Plus, the bags are airtight and waterproof, so they’ll protect your clothes from water and dirt.
  • Protect yourself. All campers need to have a first-aid kit handy. Along with essential medical supplies, bring sunscreen and insect repellent. Other essentials: hand sanitizer, maps, compass and knife. If you are camping in bear country, be sure to pack all food and essentials in bear-proof containers.
