Holiday Décor Organization and Storage Made Simple

The holidays are here and many have their homes decked from floor to ceiling in ornaments, lights and wreaths. While decorating the house is fun, the unavoidable job of taking everything down and storing it is something no one enjoys. Holiday décor is often tossed into boxes, randomly stuffed into bins and quickly stashed in the depths of the basement, garage or attic. Unfortunately, this makes pulling decorations back out more of a hassle than it needs to be.

Now is the time to start thinking about how you can re-pack your holiday décor to make the 2010 holiday season a little easier! Check out these tips for making the process more efficient to save yourself a headache next year:

  • Keep your ornament boxes.  You won’t need to invest in pricey tree ornament storage bins if you hold on to the boxes in which your decorations come. When taking the tree down, simply repackage your ornaments, stack them in cardboard boxes and they’re ready to go for next year.
  • Lose tangled garlands.  Artificial evergreen garlands can be a real pain when they’ve been stored in a box and you can’t get the individual garlands separated from one another. Solution? Try a Space Bag High Capacity Cube to store your garlands. Space Bag Cube will keep them compressed, tangle-free and safe from moisture and dirt.
  • Invest in a gift wrap organizer.   There are plenty of choices out there, but one great option is a hanging organizer. It holds several rolls of wrapping paper, scissors, tape, ribbons and bows in a large plastic organizer suspended from a hook. It’s the perfect solution for keeping your gift wrapping gear in one place, and it will help you save space since it can be stored in any closet around the house.
  • Prioritize boxes.  Be sure to label your boxes so you can see which should be opened first when you start to decorate the house. The first box you open should contain your Advent calendar, tree stand, tree skirt, Christmas cards or whatever you need first during the Christmas season.
  • Do lights right.  Christmas tree lights are perhaps the worst items to attempt to untangle! Make next year’s light stringing easier by coiling each strand around an empty wrapping paper roll to prevent them from becoming intertwined. You can eliminate the possibility of tangling by storing each coiled strand in a plastic trash bag.
  • Holiday linens.  Have holiday themed towels and bedding that you like to use? Try storing everything in a Space Bag Tote to keep it safe from pests, moisture and dirt, and take up half the storage space you’d usually need.
  • Neat wreath storage.  If your wreath comes out of its box looking a little flat and sad each year, try hanging it on the wall of your basement or garage. Just drive a nail into the wall near your holiday décor storage area, wrap your wreath loosely in plastic and hang it up so that it stays fresh looking for next year.
