Spring Cleaning Preparations
Spring brings a lot of beautiful things – flowers, sunshine, and longer days are just a few – but it also signals the time to roll up your sleeves and give the house a good cleaning. Here are a few tasks to accomplish before spring cleaning begins:
Divide and conquer. Pick a weekend for the whole family to get involved in the purging process and give each person a designated area. Remember to start at the back of the house and work your way forward. This helps move the clutter out the door, instead of creating piles in already-cleaned areas.
Cut back on closet clutter. Spring is the perfect time to assess which pieces of clothing should stay and which should go. Only keep clothing that fits and that you look great in. If clothing is damaged beyond repair, just toss it. It’s no use to keep clothing around that won’t be worn. To make even more room in your closet, remove winter items from the closet and place them in Space Bag Lavender Scented Bags for storage during the summer months. These vacuum-sealed bags will protect clothing from dust, mildew, dirt, and bugs, and keep them smelling fresh with a clean, lavender scent.
Think twice about keeping tchotchkes. There is a fine line between collections and clutter. Take time to examine your collections and ask yourself these questions: Does each item make me happy? Is the collection taking over the space I have allotted for it? Is it useful to me? We often hold on to items that we think we might need or that have sentimental value, but forget about them years down the road. These questions will help you decide if it’s time to cut back on the tchotchkes and collectibles you’ve accumulated.
Don’t forget the cupboards. It’s not just items in plain view that need to be organized. Open up the pantry cupboards and pull out every item inside. Check the expiration dates and toss anything old. Are you staring at canned goods that have been on the shelf for months or even years? If they aren’t expired, donate them to a homeless shelter or food kitchen. Conduct the same purge of bathroom cupboards. While it’s tempting to hold on to every mini shampoo and bar of soap collected from hotel stays, you most likely don’t all of need them. Keep a few for your next trip, then donate unused beauty products and toiletries to organizations such as women’s shelters.
Take it outside. Everyday space inside the home should be saved for things you use frequently. Move seasonal clothing, extra linens, holiday décor, and sports equipment to the garage, attic or basement. Don’t forget to protect items from pests by packing them in Space Bag vacuum-seal storage bags.
If you have trouble motivating yourself to get rid of something in your home, just remind yourself that everything you keep will not only take up valuable space, but probably needs to be cleaned as well. Now grab the family, turn on some music and let spring cleaning begin!
