A Lifesaver in the Andes

A before-and-after shot of my bags being repacked in the tent at 5 a.m. at 12,200 feet above sea level.

A Livesaver in the Andes with Price from San Diego, Calif.

I recently completed, err survived, a four-day trek through the Andes on my way to the famous ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. While the 13 trekkers in our group (all women) had an amazing team of porters and guides to help get us and all our stuff to the Incan ruins, we were limited to 17.6 pounds per person. We each shared one small duffle bag with another trekker and had to fit everything we needed for the four-day trip into it.

On the trail, we had really warm days and frost covered our campsites each night, so we needed lots of clothing layers. My mom and I packed most of our bulky items in the Space Bag Travel Cube and Space Bag To Go bags, and they worked perfectly. We were able to get our camping pillows, fleece jackets and down vests down to easily one-quarter of their regular size (leaving more room for comfort items – like my sheepskin boots). In addition to saving valuable space in our bags, they also kept our clothes dry and clean. We even used them to get our dirty clothes home. They were such a big hit on the trail that we had other trekkers asking us if we had any to spare for the trip home!
